100-Year-Old Marathon Man Sets Sights on 5.5km at Rotorua!

Step aside, superheroes; a living legend is preparing for the Red Stag Rotorua Marathon! Colin Thorne, a spirited centenarian from Whangārei, is about to add another remarkable chapter to his running saga. This May, he’s gearing up for the 5.5km event, a touching comeback to the race that has held a special place in his heart for years.

Thorne is no stranger to the marathon scene. This extraordinary runner has an impressive 22 full marathons to his name, with his most recent triumph at the age of 90 in 2014! But running isn’t just a pastime for Thorne. He’s still a six-day-a-week exercise enthusiast, hitting the pavement, the gym, and even the pool to stay in top form. You might even spot him at your local parkrun, leaving younger runners in his wake!

This year’s 5.5km challenge is more than a race for Thorne. It’s a celebration of a 60-year love affair with the Rotorua Marathon. Believe it or not, Thorne only started running at 64, joining the Hatea Harriers and quickly developing a passion for the sport. A friend convinced him to try the Rotorua Marathon in 1989, and that was all it took. Rotorua became his sanctuary, and he raced there for nearly half of his 50 marathons!

Looking back, Thorne’s eyes sparkle as he talks about the magic of Rotorua. His fastest Rotorua Marathon time of 3:28:33, achieved at the ripe young age of 68 in 1992, is a true testament to his dedication and superhuman fitness.

This year, things will be a little different. Thorne will be walking the 5km course alongside his daughter and son-in-law. But even at 100, his enthusiasm is contagious. He’s grateful for the chance to keep participating and hopes to inspire others to get active.

Sage Advice From ACC

And Thorne’s not the only one singing the praises of an active lifestyle. James Whitaker from ACC Injury Prevention is full of admiration for Thorne’s achievement. Whitaker emphasises the importance of taking care of your body for a long and healthy life. He also highlights the special place the Rotorua Marathon holds for so many runners, especially in this 60th anniversary year.

Whitaker has some sage advice for those looking to channel their inner Thorne. Proper shoes, a good warm-up, a comfortable pace, hydration, and plenty of rest are essential. Running isn’t just good for your body; it’s a mental boost, too. So, lace up your shoes, train smart, and savour that epic finish line feeling – just like Colin Thorne!

The Rotorua Marathon has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1965, when just 16 participants participated. Today, it’s a celebration of grit, determination, and the amazing spirit of people like Colin Thorne, who defy expectations and inspire us all. So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and move your feet!

Also, after all that exertion, a soak in a soothing spa pool by Jet Spas in Rotorua might be just the thing to help those legs feel brand new again.
